What is the Campaign about?

The Get Britain Building Coalition has been created to urge the government to extend its EC legislative right to apply reduced VAT rates on building repair and maintenance work - provisions are already in place for this to be actioned until 31 December 2010!

The reason for this reduction, As you all are aware is that the construction industry is under major threat as direct result of the current economic downturn, forecasts are that our sector could face 450,000 job losses by the end of this year.

The repercussions of this, will affect the country's long term future, and recovery will be considerably slower. According to the Get Britain Building Coalition research, by reducing the VAT rate on building repair and maintenance work it will:

• Encourage the shift from DIY or ‘make do' to employed maintenance - thereby increasing high productivity and generating higher tax revenue
• Create employment and reducing the size of the ‘grey' economy
• Reduce the amount of ‘unlivable' empty homes
• Encourage ‘mothballed' Remedial work to be restarted.
