Hunter guttering gets a health check

Chesterfield Hospital

Stormflo from Hunter Plastics, the largest PVC-U gutter system on the market, is the prefect rainwater system for healthcare, education and public sector projects with its unique design specification. Developed to accommodate huge volumes of rainwater drainage from very large roof areas, Stormflo with its deep profile and 200mm width has been used in the refurbishment of some of the busiest public areas at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Serving North Derbyshire, Chesterfield Royal Hospital provides a full range of services including 24-hour accident and emergency care. The hospital has around 550 beds and more than 3,000 staff to keep services running. The hospital's central concourse courtyard has recently been refurbished by contractor Polar Windows using Hunter's Stormflo to provide effective drainage from the large roof area.

Robert Hawkins from Polar comments "Stormflo was chosen for its high capacity to drain a very large roof area. It was very easy to put up and simple to fix and it provided the hospital with an extremely efficient rainwater solution at a cost-effective price." This cost benefit will continue since, being produced from PVC-U, Stormflo is corrosion resistant, durable and virtually maintenance-free throughout its long life.

Before Hunter designed the Stormflo system, high capacity guttering was only available in `traditional' materials like fibre cement and metal. Now Stormflo offers all the advantages of PVC-U, and, because it is much lighter in weight, longer lengths are available which means fewer joints, so the system is easier and quicker to install, saving valuable time and money on site. With health and safety considerations a top priority, Hunter Plastics Surefit guttering not only is it faster to fit, keeping time working at height to a minimum, its easy-fit features make it less hazardous to install.Stormflo incorporates Hunter's patented Surefit design pivot clips, power tool friendly fixing wings and bottom fixing points to speed up assembly and provide secure anchorage points. Computer-designed pre-lubricated seals provide snap together assembly without the need for labour intensive jointing with messy mastics or bolts.

The Stormflo range of products comprises 4 metre gutter, support bracket, joint bracket, gutter stopend and running outlet. A choice of 160mm or 100mm downpipes and fittings are available to suit specific requirements. Products are available in grey and black as standard.

Stormflo is just one part of Hunter's extensive range of rainwater systems to suit any size, style or type of building. The company also manufactures a broad range of soil, waste and underground drainage products to the highest quality standards and supplied through a nationwide network of builders merchants stockists.

Hunter down on the farm

To drain the massive roof areas of modern agricultural buildings requires a rainwater system with a capacity large enough to cope. Hunter Plastics' Stormflo was the only plastic rainwater system on the market big enough to handle the off flow from a new dairy shed at Alston Sutton Farm near Axbridge in Somerset. The recently completed massive 36m x 50m metre building is the second construction on the site to feature Hunter's Stormflo guttering.

The Stormflo was installed by contractors Leominster Construction and supplied Thomas Panels and Profiles who purchased from Bradfords Building Supplies in Ross on Wye.

Stormflo has a deep elipitical profile and 200mm width to accommodate enormous volumes of rainwater drainage from very large roof areas. It is the only high capacity rainwater system available in PVC-U, which has several advantages over other materials. PVC-U is light and can therefore be supplied in longer lengths, saving time and money in installation. It is also corrosion resistant, durable and practically maintenance-free.

Hunter's Stormflo system is particularly suited to agricultural buildings which are often open-sided. Because of its large capacity downpipes can be sited strategically, even at corners, and with fewer downpipes needed, it is possible to make savings on below ground drainage. A choice of 160mm or 110mm downpipes and fittings are available to suit specific requirements.

Stormflo was specifically deigned to be easyand quick to install. A tapered front clip with a lead-in action simplifies gutter insertion, while specially-designed fixing wings allow easy power tool access to screw holes for fast and efficient fixing. Built-in height adjustment ensures correct alignment and a central web provides solid front edge support. The robust bracket has a secure three screw fixing and offers high resistance to snow loading and updraft. Pre-lubricated recessed seals make for simple ‘snap together' assembly without the need for labour intensive jointing with messy mastics or bolts.

Hunter Plastics manufactures one of the widest range of PVC-U rainwater, soil and waste and underground drainage systems in the UK. Every product has been assessed by the BSI and is manufactured to ISO9000 quality standards.

Stormflo on Cheetham Hill in Manchester

sgnzrz45p1gnes45zthtn4i5 Cheetwood

The sports and community centre in Cheetham Hill in Manchester was built by main contractor CSC Construction for the Guinness Trust on behalf of the local community.

The building's large roof demanded a large capacity rainwater system to cope with the anticipated high flow rates, and Hunter Plastics' Stormflo's impressive deep, 200mm wide profile fitted the bill perfectly.

Martin Millington from contractor A Millington had never used Stormflo before but is enthusiastic about the results. "It was obvious that we were going to need a larger profile guttering," he comments, "and after shopping around with a number of suppliers, we discovered that Stormflo was the only PVC system that could cope with the flow rates from this particular roof." "An aluminium product would have been much more difficult to install and had a very long lead time - Stormflo was available in just three days,"

Stormflo at Hong Kong University

sgnzrz45p1gnes45zthtn4i5 uni

Hunter Plastics' high capacity rainwater systems have proved themselves ideally suited to Hong Kong's monsoon climate. The high capacity Highflo PVC-U system has recently been installed on a Tilden pre-engineered for Hong Kong University, following its successful performance for Tilden on contractors' accommodation during construction of Hong Kong's new airport at Chek Lap Kok.

With no space to build out, Hong Kong University decided to build up, commissioning a pre-engineered, two storey extension to be erected on top of the existing three storey building. The extension provides significant additional facilities including lecture rooms, research rooms and offices.

Their product director George Harvey specified the Hunter rainwater system and comments: "This building has a large roof area and needs a highly efficient and robust rainwater system, particularly in view of Hong Kong's high rainfall and stormy winds. We had already used Highflo on a 120,000 m2 construction site ‘camp' at Chek Lap Kok and knew it could handle the climate."

Stormflo Inverhouse Distiller’s Moffat Distillery

The refurbishment of the rainwater drainage system on a massive storage building at a well-known Scottish distillery called for a heavy-duty, high capacity system that could cope with the enormous flow rates from the roof.

The Stormflo gutter system was fitted at Inverhouse Distiller's Moffat Distillery where a variety of Scotland's most popular brands of whisky are stored. Two large buildings - one of 172 linear metres long and the other 125 linear metres long - had their original fibre-cement guttering replaced by contractors Rentokil Four Seasons Roofing.

The buildings' original fibre-cement guttering had deteriorated beyond repair and so Kenny Forbes, Rentokil Four Season's Contracts Manager, looked around for a system to replace it. "These are very large roofs - thirty metres from eaves to ridge - so the guttering had to have a big enough capacity to cope with the flow rates that would come off them," he comments. "The guttering went up with no problems at all. In fact, the lads were delighted with it,We have had some pretty heavy downpours since it was installed - I have inspected the Stormflo myself and it has stood up to the test very well,"

Stormflo on Marshalls Specialist Vehicles, Cambridge

Marshalls Specialist Vehicles in Cambridge, a large specialist parts manufacturer for military vehicles and buses, needed to expand its present tool-making premises to cope with demand for its products, Stormflo was effectively used on the huge industrial building.

Steve Bailey of Lynx Court Ltd in Newmarket, who installed the Stormflo, expressed his delight at how simple the Stormflo installation process was: "This was our first experience with Stormflo and we had no problems at all," he enthused. "It was much lighter and easier to install than metal guttering and we completed the job very quickly. It was a piece of cake and we will be using it again,"

Stormflo on Salt Storage barns in Norfolk

sgnzrz45p1gnes45zthtn4i5 Salt

Timber salt storage barns with 500m2 domed roofs built for Norfolk County Council and the Highways Agency by Dome UK featuring Hunter's Stormflo system.

The barns' large roof areas demanded a high capacity system which would will channel away rainwater effectively because keeping the buildings and the salt inside them dry is crucial. With its impressive flow capacities, Stormflo also helped Dome UK save time and money by allowing them to install only one downpipe rather than two.

Dome UK Sales Engineer Steve Dempsey says: "Because Stormflo's capacity is so high, it allows us to install one downpipe rather than two which makes the groundwork cheaper and quicker. It is also highly efficient at channelling away the rainwater, which is essential on a salt barn. We plan to use Stormflo as standard on all our barns from now on."

Stormflo in Sir John Moores Barracks

sgnzrz45p1gnes45zthtn4i5 john

Stormflo was installed on a gymnasium developed for the army to serve Sir John Moore Barracks in the city.

Constructed by Ballast Wiltshier. The single storey brick building, measuring 20 metres wide and 36 metres long; so flow rates from the pitched, tiled roof are considerable! Tony Robinson, Ballast Wiltshier's Project Manager on the job believes that Hunter's Stormflo fitted the bill exactly. "We spoke to our usual supplier, and told them about the requirements for the project's rainwater system. We asked them to come up with a solution, and they immediately suggested that we use Hunter Stormflo," he comments. "The rainwater was fitted by our carpenters and it went up with no problems. Of course it's much lighter than metal or fibre-cement which were the only other alternatives."

Stormflo on Wilstone Great Farm

sgnzrz45p1gnes45zthtn4i5 Farm

Steel frame manufacturer and contractors Gadson Engineering regularly have to fit high capacity rainwater systems on the large buildings they design and build. One large project where only stormflo would do was for a 15m wide, 36 metre long straw store and Cattle shed a Wilstone Great Farm near Tring in Hertfordshire Stormflo was used because it has a deep profile and 200mm width to accommodate enormous volumes of rainwater.

"The client was very happy for us to use Stormflo on this project," continues Gadson. "We had already used it on another of his building's when its existing asbestos gutter needed replacing and he was very impressed with it. Whenever I need to put up rainwater systems now, I always opt for a Hunter high capacity system... I have to say that I wouldn't use anything else now. I much prefer it to metal systems for a number of reasons. Firstly it's a lot lighter and easier to put up, which always goes down well on site. And secondly, it tends to arrive on site in good condition."
