Spring has arrived

In my last blog I took the chance to blame the weather for the construction industry being so slow to get started this year.

No such excuses can be used now. Spring has arrived with a flourish.

We also have the election announced, which should take away some uncertainty (once it is concluded) and give us a platform for economic recovery. Will we need to recover from the election itself? I will be looking with interest at the three main parties for signs that they will pledge to invest in construction. The "Get Britain Building campaign" was started last year and could really do with a post-election boost.

The weather has also helped my football team, West Ham. After a winter of discontent they have now taken 4 points from 2 matches and look much more confident. Can I now look forward to Premiership status for the Irons next season?

I have just returned from a business visit to Moscow. Spring has arrived late this year and new building has started in earnest after the worst winter for over 30 years.

Moscow is the busiest city I have experienced. Since the Russian Federation became a market driven economy, change has been dramatic and there is an emerging free market, driving consumer spending. This is shown by the traffic problems being experienced all over Moscow as 4x4 ownership is common replacing small locally produced cars. I thought London was congested but not in comparison.

What this cannot spoil is the absolute beauty of the architecture on view. Not just tourist sights like Red Square, but also the towering stone buildings and elaborate churches that are spread all over the city. Coupled with a warm welcome from the Russian people, this makes Moscow a must visit city.

British culture and goods are well accepted in Russia. Not just Hunter products but also the great band, Madness are playing in Moscow for a week in April. I am not sure if their lyrics will be understood but it would be fun to see!
